The late Mrs. Menaben Mehta, a true blue charitable woman, helped generations to come with a humble sum of one thousand rupees. She entrusted this amount to her son and her grandchildren, who then built the renowned Lilavati Hospital And Research Centre in Mumbai, and set up the Kirtilal Manilal Mehta Charitable Trust and the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust.
Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust’s initiatives have helped the lives of many over time. The spirit of philanthropy we carry within our hearts isn’t limited to the larger picture but is made up by tending to every individual who needs medical care. This philosophy is what led us to one of our biggest victories during The Bhuj Relief Operation.
We’re not bound within stepping up only during a crisis. Lilavati Hospital has been known to carry out 100% free surgeries, free OPDs, free cancer camps, and more. The journey of providing 100% free surgeries to the underprivileged began with the heartbreaking incident of an 11-year-old boy. He walked through the doors of our hospital, empty-handed, while suffering from a fatal heart condition.
Lilavati Hospital And Research Centre is conceived as an embodiment of altruism, where our sole purpose was to help those in need. Our philosophy has always revolved around increasing the quality of life of people, and we keep pushing our boundaries to advance our methods and research in medicine.
This determination to constantly improve the lives of our patients led us to take effective action towards transforming the landscape of healthcare within our country.
While our hope was to alter what healthcare looked like in India, we realised the gap in healthcare in India was too massive to conquer on an immediate basis.
This gap between the population of patients, and the number of facilities available is evidently high. The demand for healthcare services far exceeds the supply, leaving a large number of individuals in dire need of medical attention.
Embarking on this journey from the grounds of our homeland, we aim to build a world-class hospital, with state-of-the-art facilities in our hometown, Gujarat. The upcoming GIFT City, in Ahmedabad, will set the base for the start of our operations to reshape India’s healthcare system.
Our resolve is to develop innovative therapies, make progress in the field of medicine, and provide healthcare to all humanity.
While our focus remains revamping the healthcare, birthing quality medical professionals and conducting world-class research for all of India, we noticed that Gujarat was calling out for help. After continuously working towards improving the literacy, and health rate of the rural and underprivileged areas in Maharashtra, it was time to take a quick look back home.
What we found was astounding. After one of the most in-depth, extensive research programmes conducted throughout Gujarat, a report was published stating:
228 per 100,000
persons in Gujarat suffered from Tuberculosis in 2019, recording one of the highest numbers from all over India.
12% of doctors reside in urban areas, in Gujarat. This has led to a shortage of surgeons, obstetricians and gynecologists in rural areas.
Not only does Gujarat have a shortage of inspectors when it comes to the regulation of pharmaceuticals, but the inspectors also lack technical expertise related to drug regulation.
Gujarat does not mandate doctors to be present in rural areas.
